PRP Platelet Counter

The PC100 is a PRP platelet counter designed for use directly at the point of treatment, without the need for laboratory testing: it measures the platelet concentration of platelet rich plasma and of the patient’s whole blood in about 4 minutes, from 10 µl of PRP or 20 µl of blood. It is validated for PRP concentrations from 250 to 3600 platelets per nanolitre, a range that regular hematology analyzers are not designed for, and it needs no calibration, no cleaning and no laboratory.

PRP platelet counter: measuring the platelet concentration of platelet rich plasma before injection

Why a PRP practice needs its own platelet counter

PRP works through the growth factors released by platelets, so the number of platelets you inject is the dose. Preparation kits quote a nominal concentration factor, but the actual platelet count of the final product depends on the patient’s baseline count, the centrifugation protocol, the volume drawn off and how carefully the buffy coat was handled. Two preparations made with the same kit can differ by a factor of two or more. Without a platelet counter for PRP you do not know what you inject; with one, every treatment is documented with a measured platelet concentration.

  • Dose control: measure baseline and final concentration and calculate the true concentration factor per patient.
  • Quality control: detect a failed preparation (poor centrifugation, activated or clumped platelets) before it is used.
  • Documentation: a printed or exported report per treatment supports your quality system, patient record and any outcome study.
  • Protocol optimisation: compare kits, spin settings and volumes with real numbers instead of assumptions.

The analytical performance of the PC100 in PRP was established in a peer-reviewed study in Thrombosis Journal: PRP samples were counted with the PC100 and with a Sysmex XP-300, with a median difference of 1.4% and a correlation coefficient of 0.99 across the measuring range. The study was performed with the Clinical Thrombosis & Hemostasis department of Maastricht UMC+. Details are on our validation page and in the accuracy and precision summary.

How a PRP platelet count works with the PC100

  1. Take 20 µl of the patient’s whole blood (baseline) or 10 µl of the finished PRP.
  2. Add the sample to the single-use reagent cup to lyse the red blood cells.
  3. Fill the two chambers of the disposable counting slide and load it into the PC100.
  4. Read the platelet concentration in platelets per nanolitre, together with the CV of the duplicate count, and print or export the report.

Counting the baseline and the final product takes two slides and gives you the concentration factor for that patient. See the illustrated guide how to make a platelet count in 4 steps and the page on reading the platelet count results.

Who uses the PC100 for PRP

The PC100 is used by practices and clinics that prepare PRP for orthopaedic and sports medicine injections, aesthetic and dermatological treatments, hair restoration, dental and maxillofacial surgery, and by research groups that study platelet concentrates. It is a CE-marked class A in vitro diagnostic device, intended for use by or under the responsibility of a medical professional. Frequently asked questions

Can a normal hematology analyzer count PRP?

Hematology analyzers are validated for whole blood. Concentrated PRP is often above their linear range and has to be diluted first, which adds an error and a laboratory step. The PC100 is validated for PRP from 250 to 3600 platelets per nanolitre and counts it directly.

How much PRP is needed for a count?

10 microlitres. A whole blood baseline count needs 20 microlitres of venous blood.

How long does a PRP platelet count take?

Sample preparation takes about 5 minutes and the count itself about 4 minutes, so a result is available roughly 10 minutes after sampling, without leaving the treatment room.

Is the PC100 a certified medical device?

Yes. The PC100 is CE-marked as a class A in vitro diagnostic device under IVDR 2017/746 and is manufactured under an ISO 13485 quality management system.

What does it cost per count?

Each count uses one disposable kit (slide and reagent). Current prices of the device and kits are listed in our webshop; see also our page on platelet counter price and cost per test.
